The Democratic candidate for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris, and her Republican rival, former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), have clashed over their proposals on immigration, taxes, tariffs, abortion and foreign policy.
This is what each one promises if they come to power after the November 5 elections.

immigration
Harris wants to make permanent the restrictions on the right to asylum that the Joe Biden Administration established in the face of record numbers of migrants at the border and proposes a reform that offers a “path to citizenship” for undocumented immigrants living in the country, without giving details of how you plan to achieve it.
Trump stigmatizes migrants with xenophobic rhetoric and promises mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, resuming the construction of the wall and eliminating immigration benefits for people fleeing their countries, despite the legal challenges that these measures would entail.
Abort
Harris has made the defense of abortion a central issue of her campaign and is betting on legislation that restores reproductive rights, although it is unlikely that she will achieve a sufficient majority in Congress to do so.
Trump boasts that the judges he placed on the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to abortion in 2022 and celebrates that each state is now free to restrict that practice, but he has promised that he would veto a national ban on abortion if Congress approved it.
foreign policy
Harris calls for an end to the Gaza war, while promising to continue supporting Israel militarily and betting on a two-state solution. The Democrat would maintain the shipment of weapons to Ukraine and promises to compete with China in a responsible way.
Trump claims that he would end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours, although he has not explained how. He has criticized the shipment of weapons to kyiv, threatens to leave NATO, has positioned himself as a firm defender of Israel and does not support the creation of a Palestinian state.
Trade
Harris defends tariffs on some Chinese imports, such as electric vehicles, but rejects generalized tariffs to avoid a price increase that affects the working classes.
Trump promises tariffs of between 10 and 20% on all imported products, and 60% for those from China, to force companies to move their production to the United States.
Taxes
Harris promises tax breaks for small businesses and raising taxes on large businesses, from 21% to 28%. Like Trump, he proposes eliminating tip taxes.
Trump wants to extend the tax cut for large businesses that he made during his term and proposes lowering the tax rate from 21% to 15% for those companies that manufacture all their products in the United States. He promises to eliminate overtime taxes.

Harris defends subsidies for renewable energy and electric vehicles, but has abandoned her opposition to hydraulic fracturing (fracking).
Trump denies the climate crisis, opposes electric vehicles and promises to increase oil and natural gas production. When he was in the White House he eliminated hundreds of environmental regulations and withdrew from the Paris Accords.
Health
Harris wants to extend a series of subsidies from the 2010 healthcare reform, known as Obamacare, which expanded health coverage for low-income people, and claims to have capped the price of insulin.
Trump has attempted to repeal Obamacare in the past and now says he has a “concept plan” to change that law, but has offered no details. He promises to cut taxes on Social Security benefits, which would hasten it running out of funds.

Harris defends stricter background checks for firearms buyers, although she has revealed that she owns a semi-automatic pistol to deflect criticism from Republicans who accused her of wanting to ban guns.
Trump has emerged as a staunch defender of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which enshrines the right to own weapons, and claims to be the best friend of the National Rifle Association.

Harris advocates for the decriminalization of recreational marijuana nationwide and criticizes the disproportionate incarceration of African Americans and Latinos for cannabis possession.
Trump says we must put an end to “unnecessary arrests” of people for carrying small amounts of marijuana.
