From a hospital bed, Carlos Roberto Bú Mejía told Channel 5’s TN5 exclusively how he survived a shark attack in Tela, Atlántida, in the north of the country.
Last Sunday, October 15, the 38-year-old man arrived from his native Ocotepeque, in the east of the country, with his family to the beach to enjoy a nice day.

However, within minutes of swimming with his loved ones, Carlos was the victim of an attack by the dangerous shark.
“It was an impact on my right leg, it was a pain that came and a roar; I felt that animal so big that I just said: ‘My Lord, free me from this,’” he began narrating.
According to him, he used all his strength to fight for his life, although he could not prevent the shark from tearing off a part of his body and then attacking him again.
“When the other wave came, it wanted to attack my stomach and what I could do was grab him and slap him a few times, he couldn’t grab my stomach, otherwise he would have torn me and at this moment I would be buried,” he concluded.
Carlos Roberto underwent surgery at the hospital in the city in the north of the country where he is recovering.
However, the fact that he almost died due to the attack of the dangerous marine animal has caused a negative impact on the economy of Tela, as tourists and locals fear experiencing something similar and not surviving.
Despite this, Mayor Ricardo Cálix urges tourists to visit the city, its restaurants and emblematic sites, although it is temporarily prohibited to enter the sea.
